Building and construction sites are perfect targets for criminals as:
- security can often be weak, especially when work has finished for the day and the site is empty
- many of the vehicles and equipment used on site are hired, making them difficult to track.
Follow these steps to reduce your chances of becoming a victim of crime:
- Make use of the National Plant and Equipment Register. They record details of members plant and equipment, so if stolen the items can be traced and returned to the rightful owners.
- Heras fencing allows neighbours or passers-by to see into the site. However, it isn’t the most secure form of fencing.
- Employ security guards 24/7 to patrol areas that store or contain white goods, copper items, construction vehicles for fuel thefts and site office assets.
- A security post can also regulate visitors on site and restrict/control vehicular access.
- Good quality portable lighting will help light up the site and deter intruders.
- CCTV and intruder alarm systems can protect security compounds, storage containers and site offices.
- Protect valuable business information, including staff records, payroll information, work schedules, site plans and future ventures or anything that could undermine company policy and data protection if lost or stolen.
- Fuel stores can be protected by fitting a fuel tank alarm available from a Secured by Design police approved company.
- Everyone working on site should be encouraged to mark all their tools
- Any tools left on site overnight should be stored in security tool sheds, protected by CCTV or intruder alarm systems
- Remove ignition keys from ALL unattended vehicles and immobilise equipment when not being used
- Report any suspicious behaviour or thefts to the police immediately.
- Be wary of anyone offering plant or equipment for sale, particularly if they have no proof of ownership. Most major companies paint their equipment with their logo, company name or own colours. If suspicious call the police immediately.
- Store valuable materials such as copper pipe, electrical cable and lead in secure stores, ensuring they are protected by CCTV, intruder alarms and/or security patrols.
- Beware of the likelihood of theft from completed or partially completed buildings, such as copper pipe, kitchen units, central heating boilers and white goods.
- Register your equipment with CESAR marking scheme to help protect your plant from theft and increase the chances of recovery.
